PART 1: I’ve always been drawn to Baroque frames and how excessive and ornamental they are. I wanted to make my own version of that language, but push it somewhere darker and more Gothic. I’ve also been playing a lot of Bloodborne lately, so that definitely started bleeding into the shapes, details, and overall mood of the collection.
Part 2: I’ve always been obsessed with typography. Making custom type from scratch is probably one of the most rewarding parts of designing for me, but also one of the most difficult. I spend hours adjusting a single letter, changing proportions, and rebuilding shapes.
Part 3: My Illustrator files basically turn into giant worktables. For months, I’ll keep filling the artboards with symbols, unfinished typography, words, sketches, references, shapes, and random ideas. Most of it doesn’t immediately become anything. Having everything sitting together in one huge space helps me think. Eventually, connections start forming between things that were made weeks or months apart.
Part 4: (Physical Object) Seeing everything finally become a physical object is probably the most satisfying part of the process. Especially with the new aluminum prints. The silver underneath the artwork catches the light and changes depending on where you’re standing. Certain parts glow in the reflection. After spending so long looking at everything on a screen, seeing it exist as an actual object completely changes it.
